Globalisation School 2010
Reviewing past debates, arming ourselves for today! 26 September to 1 October 2010, Ritz Hotel, Sea Point, Cape Town
ABOUT THE SCHOOL September sees the hosting of our 2010 annual globalisation school. ILRIG has been hosting its globalisation school since 2002. Activists from a wide range of organisations, including social movements and trade unions throughout Africa are invited to apply.
The 2010 School takes place at a time when the system of global capitalism is in an ongoing crisis. A crisis which brings new challenges for us – on the one hand having to resist being made to carry the responsibility for the crisis, and on the other taking advantage of the opportunity to show that capitalism is unsustainable. Meeting these challenges will force us to take a look at our own strengths and weaknesses and to review our own knowledge and assumptions. For these reasons the 2010 School will review past themes of Schools – about the nature of the state, about the state of our movements today, about imperialism today, about democracy and about the causes of the ongoing crisis of capitalism and the possibilities of alternatives.
These discussions will be combined with network meetings of activists to plan their campaigns, as well as our regular features of music, poetry, theatre and movies.
AIMS OF THE SCHOOL · To review the themes of the past Schools and reflect on their relevance today. · To look at developing alternatives to globalisation. · To engage in forums with activists from movements in SA and elsewhere as to the way forward for current struggles
THE STRUCTURE OF THE SCHOOL The school consists of open plenary sessions and cultural events and closed 3-day classes. Come and debate inputs by various speakers and guests and select a course which is of most interest to your organisation. Classes will be held on the following topics:
· Building Women’s Activism · Trade and Investment · New Forms of Organisation · Democracy and Public Power · Youth and Globalisation · Introduction to Political Economy
WHO SHOULD ATTEND The Globalisation School is open to all activists in South Africa and elsewhere in Africa that have an interest in developing alternatives to globalisation. ILRIG would especially encourage activists in trade unions, social movements and NGOs who can act as educators in their organisations to attend. ILRIG is committed to ensuring that there is a gender balance amongst the participants.
